The Chequers, Crockenhill

A ploughman's lunch is served on a white plate featuring a crusty baguette, slices of ham, slices of cheddar cheese, pickled onions, gherkins, a small metal dish of chutney, and a side of mixed salad greens. The plate is placed on a dark wooden table, with eyeglasses, a knife, and a fork visible nearby. A glass of drink and a coaster are also present in the background, creating a cozy pub dining atmosphere.

The Food.

7 -Pickled Onion.
Some good-sized pickled onions on the plate (silver skins, as usual), with some gherkins. They were good, flavour, crunch and not too acidic.

8 -Pickle.
It's not Ploughman's pickle, but it's no problem. It was a chutney and entirely appropriate and Satisfactory.

7 -Cheese / Ham.

Cheese.
Cheddar. - It was OK. But Sliced? Was this from a pack of pre-sliced cheese? If you have read one of my other reviews you will recognise the next sentence: I'm OK with that because this is still how I feel, just applied to another dish!   A tad on the mild side, I prefer my cheddar to have more West Country oomph about it, this just seemed like a bit of OK mousetrap. A bit small too, but you should know by now I'm cheese greedy, probably a perfectly sensible size for most people.

The Ham.
The Ham was a triumph, and once again rescued the cheese and ham score here! Cheese alone would have scored a lot lower (Unless there was a pound of the stuff on my plate). Yeah, the ham was perfect. Moist, tasty, just the right thickness and a reasonable quantity.  I could be greedy and want more, and would not be offended by a dozen more slices as it was beautiful. Nice one!

7 -Bread.
Standard Pub Par-baked baguette. It wasn't bad, just nicely crisp and warmed.

3 -Spread
Butter. Now, there was a thing - the butter was missing, and I had to ask for it.  These things happen.  It however drops a few points because whilst this issue was quickly remedied the butter when it arrived was sub-zero temperature and unspreadable.  I guess this was a hangover from it being missed.  It tasted OK, though.

3 -Presentation
The presentation was OK, nothing wrong with it, but there was no journey. I not aiming to be a snob here. If a big lump of cheese, nice fresh bread with butter, an apple, some pickle and a flagon of cider were left in a cloth sack, well that would be original. Hey, I'm not a chef, it's not my job. What do you think? This subject is hardly likely to ignite a storm on social media.......

1 -Salad, etc.
Nothing particularly wrong with it, and it would have been sorely missed. But, it was tired and limp. A few leaves lurking on the plate.  I suspect it had been on the plate for a while as the order took quite a while to be produced. Some dressing, or watery salad like tomato or cucumber would have gone some way to rescuing this.

1 -Originality.
Pretty standard, nothing stands out.

A ploughman's lunch is displayed on a white plate from a top-down perspective. The plate includes a crusty baguette, slices of ham, slices of cheddar cheese, pickled onions, gherkins, a small metal dish of chutney, and a side of mixed salad greens. The plate is set on a dark wooden table, and a drink coaster is partially visible in the background.

Beverages

7 - Drinks.
Beer. I had Neck Oil by Beavertown.  There were other drinks available.  Not the widest of choices, but then pubs have a difficult balancing act, and if they're a tied house (and not a free house) their choices can be quite restricted. Anyway, reasonable selection of Victuals and kept well.

7 - Service
The service was good & the staff were very friendly and helpful. We were made to feel welcome and that was all was rather excellent.

The starters were out in no time and they were of great quality.

However, the mains took an age.  And I mean an age.  They did eventually arrive, there had been some sort of equipment issue in the kitchen.  These things happen. Would have been better to tell us about the delay - a chance to have a packet of crisps or something. I hear that they are usually quite prompt and efficient, so not going to make a fuss about it.

If it happens again, I will........

8 - Atmosphere
Old fashioned boozer, country setting, got more of a town atmosphere than one of rurality. Nice a cozy though - a place to be cherished and kept going.

3 - Location.
Edge of the countryside, quite nice.

4 - Toilets.
Standard, good.

You can pretty much work out the scoring regime from this review. Drop me a few words and a couple of pictures. You will be fully credited.

A photo of The Chequers, a traditional pub with a cream and black exterior and red signage, located on a street corner. The pub features a prominent entrance and several windows. A signboard outside advertises events. The sky is blue with a few clouds, and there are trees in the background. The pub has a welcoming, classic British look.
A picture of the outside, because I didn't take enough photos of the food.
